Nomadic Guru

Described as a 'life style aid', Nomadic Guru aims to provide an alternative use for GPS technology, one which does not focus on location or navigation.

The work consists of a Flash movie which can be run on any PDA with an internet browser and Flash Player software. When running, the program imports data relating to speed, direction, altitude and the GPS satellites ‘in view’, which is then used to determine content displayed on screen.

Version 1 empoys a tarot card inspired content, displaying a 'Nomadic Sign'. This was developed as a cardboard prototype.

In Version 2 the 'Nomadic Sign' is displayed at the centre of a dial around which the satellites being used to calculate position are shown. Their place on the dial relates to their position in relation to the user.

On either side of the dial are two bars which display speed and altitude data. The bar varies in height as speed or altitude increase and decrease. The scale against which these bars are set changes according to the satellites in view. Rather than a speed scale set in miles or kilometres per hour, other terms are used including the Scoville chilli scale, which ranges from bell pepper to habanero.

The direction of travel is also shown on the dial, but North and South have been replaced with alternative terms including 'Growth' and 'Decline' or 'Heaven' and 'Hell'.
