A tale of love and cheating...with a sting. Bailey gets up to make his best man's speech. He's nervous. Addy, the groom, isn't just his oldest mate, he's also his boss and Bailey can't let him down. To make things worse, it's all being filmed. After a few stumbles, Bailey gets into his stride and begins to lead the wedding guests through a web of stories about himself, Addy and their school friends. Soon Bailey wanders off track, talking about his own failures and loneliness. The guests grow restless. As he begins a story about visiting a prostitute, the bride intervenes. She is desperate to shut him up and get on with her wedding. But Bailey turns on her, shocking the room into submission. Addy is very quiet, afraid of disturbing the past. Bailey's story continues to unfold. The prostitute is a girl from their school: "The Ashtray", the girl that no one liked. The girl with whom Addy once spent a night in a deserted house, apparently hiding from her in the toilet. Ashtray and Bailey begin to meet regularly. As their relationship develops, it becomes clear that there's a secret between her and Addy. Bailey is desperate to know the truth and they strike a deal. If Bailey makes sure that Addy passes out on his stag night and brings him to Ashtray's flat, then she will reveal the secret. All goes to plan. But when Bailey arrives at the flat, he discovers that Ashtray is ready to leave town forever. He agrees to go with her but they must deal with Addy first. They drive to the beach and carry him down to the water's edge. Then, at dawn, on the sand, Ashtray tells her story. Addy has to stop Bailey telling Ashtray's secret. He rushes to turn the video camera off. But when the picture comes back, Addy is being restrained by his guests who want to hear the end of the story. Addy didn't spend that night locked in the toilet. Instead he and Ashtray made love. Then secretly met again and again for sex in an empty beach hut by the sea. A few years later, Addy didn't need Ashtray anymore. But she couldn't bear for it to end. By blackmailing him with proof of their affair, she hoped they could stay together. But all he wanted was to keep their secret buried. Using her need for contact with him, Addy dragged her into prostitution and drug addiction. Unable to leave or speak out, Ashtray now lives for the chance to get revenge. Bailey is this chance. Bailey and Ashtray leave Addy's unconscious body at the water's edge and walk back to the car. Bailey knows now that she wants Addy dead. It would be so easy. But he is Addy's oldest friend. At the last moment, Bailey runs back to the water. He can save Addy and still leave with Ashtray. But when he looks up, she is gone. There's nothing left of his new life. Bailey has finished his story. He raises a toast to Ashtray, picks up his jacket, and leaves the room. The wedding guests watch in silence, Addy is crying silently on the floor, his bride looks on in disgust. The Best Man is an intimate and emotional drama based on the critically acclaimed play by Glyn Maxwell. With a fresh and innovative style, the film breathlessly recounts fifteen years of love, sex and betrayal, ratcheting up the tension and mystery until its devastating conclusion. |
